When I first met Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, the director of Bulgari’s watch design center, he told me about the origins of the Finissimo, which immediately seemed to me and would later prove to be the first great Haute Horlogerie sports classic of the new millennium. At that time we still had the opportunity to sit down at a restaurant and enjoy - in addition to the food and wine delicacies of La Chaux-de-Fonds - watch Buonamassa sketch cars and helicopters with ease on a paper napkin.

Over the years, I have had to deal with many self-styled designers, who were nevertheless incapable of designing anything, just as I have had to deal with many stylists who were incapable of handling needle and thread. Buonamassa, on the other hand, struck me with his ability to «draw» words, and in his crystalline stroke it wasn’t difficult to see the plot of the future of Bulgari watches. Today we are in a pandemic and we have to talk to each other by phone while Fabrizio is driving. Cars are in his genes and he places the Finissimo side by side with the razor-sharp lines that alternate angles and surfaces of Giugiaro’s Boomerang and the Lamborghini Countach that Marcello Gandini designed for Bertone, which we will return to later in this issue.
