Establishing Switzerland’s largest hydrogen production plant designed to power trucks: the project is being pursued by power company EW Höfe in Freienbach (SZ), energy group Alpiq and gas station operator Socar Energy Switzerland.

The objective is to achieve zero emissions production of between 1,000 and 1,200 tons per year, as renewable energy sources will be used, the three partners explain in a statement today. The plant will be located in Freienbach and is expected to be operational by the end of 2022. No financial details were revealed.

The hydrogen will be transported via pipelines to the Fuchsberg freeway area on the A3, which will be equipped with two special pumps for trucks. The project also plans to inject waste heat from production into the new regional district heating network.
